Fifa 20 server and netcode analysis (Now pros are messing with their connection to get an advantage)
Believe it or not the delay is on purpose to not punish people with packet loss/high latency.
Last year they introduced a patch to reduce the buffer time before the game retry to re send packets when there is an error. And it was the smoothest gameplay I ever had in any fifa game online. this change reduced the time that allows a player connection to catch up with the server so it also reduced the maximum time of lag compensation the net code can apply. This resulted in perfect gameplay for people with stable internet, by stable I dont mean high speeds. I mean hard wired connection or even close range wifi on a router/modem that isnt shared with multiple other people/devices using the bandwidth.
This also resulted in more people suffering from speed up lag. Speed up lag is 100% because of the player connection, failure to recieve or/send packet to/from server means there will be an interreption until the player catches up. People almost revolted in twitter and reddit and even here. Ea reverted the changes.
Ea reverted the changes because IMO they want more people to be able to play the game so more opportunity for them to make money.
They invested in new amazon servers in france. Amazon servers are among the best and I have conducted long testings and they never showed packet drop or latency jitter. They also using amazon servers on germany, their perfect. I3d.net servers in netherland and again they never showed any issues in my testings.
The real problem is the net code, the servers are programmed to drop the refresh rate to as low as 20hz if one client is having latency or packet drop issue. to make it simple for you to understand, the net code tells the server, hello there is on client with bad connection. please lower the refreshrate and make the game fair for both clients 😅
The notion of fairness is truly ridiculous here, they make one player delayed so the other doesnt get speed up lag!
I have tested playing on 3g/4g hotspot with massive packet drop and its always the smoothest online gameplay ever. I feel the advantage I have on my opponent when I dribble past his players yet he can't chain two passes.
Finally to explain why some games feel smooth amd some feel like playing in mud. when you and your opponent both have perfect connection to the server the gameplay will be smooth, if one party have issues, the client with the best connection get punished! The refresh rate changes even mid game to adjust to clients changes in connectivity quality which is truly pathetic.
So if you have the slightest hope in this game getting fair online gameplay then you will forever be dissapointed. this company is only interested in maximum amount of player engagement. thinks that warning/time banning/punishing people with bad internet like the majority of games do nowadays will hurt their income.

It's all about income and the player base engagement. people will still play with delay but they won't with massive speed up lag.

what if I told you all amazon servers they use in france and germany are 60hz but the refreshrate is dynamic and changes even mid game to compensate for connectivity issues.

I was like you at first, I couldn't believe the results when testing latency and packetloss to servers. How come I have delayed gameplay when everythig is stable on my end? well you notice improvement in responsivity late at night and early morning because many factors decides connectivity quality. Not going in to details too much but even your isp network plays a role in your gameplay quality, when there is overload in your country network or even at one hop, you will feel more delay. When playing in none peak times, there is less chance to have delay.

Just one question, how come i have never got speed up lag on any other online game? if the speed up lag was my internet?
many games especially shooters visually mask the lag. You never notice anything while playing but with bad internet you get killed around corners because people with better connectivity see you first for example.
So how did the speed up lag just magically vanish for me in fifa 17? I didnt change anything on my end. It also vanished for a lot of other players too.
If you're on long wifi or/and sharing the internet with multiple people on the house hold you will always get speed up lag if no QOS is configured to give your console/pc priority in send/recieving packets. in fifa 17 they introduced more servers and made most of the game only use servers and no more p2p. Also in 17 till now they are using exactly the same netcode that tries to compensate too much for **** connections.

I always knew it was unstable connections ruining the experience for people with stable internet. Fifa is the only game you're forced to throttle your connection to improve the experience on your end. I've tested this extensively, the more stable your connection is and the more you get punished. They don't give a flying f, that's why this game can never be taking seriously on the competitive scene.
Its also why most streamers have perfect gameplay, they use their upload bandwidth to stream the match in HD 😅

All the people here, that are saying "my internet is fast, wired, stable", he just explained it doesnt matter since if you are playing someone who doesnt have that, your gameplay will be slower and laggy since the servers compensate what other person lacks.
How fast, stable and wired your connection is doesnt matter in the end if the person on the other side doesnt have the same (good) connection as you.

The lag compensation seems worse than ever this year.. I used to feel like if I concentrate I can fight through it
But this year it's on a whole other level, as you mentioned I just can't string 2 passes together.. the ball just slows down and my players all freeze until the opponent casually jogs over and intercepts the ball
Last night in WL my game completely froze on the halfway line for 4 seconds, then resumed in fast forward.. my opponent was in my box scoring a goal.. so basically he dropped frames on his wifi and EA decided I should be punished (I'm on 200mb, wired connection with 0 packet loss)
I have a broadband monitor running 24/7, so I know 100% the issue wasn't on my end.. I have a stable connection with 0 packet loss and consistent, stable latency
Really don't understand why they can't just implement a system that forces both clients to sync up to create a balance.. even if that means horrible slow gameplay or maybe the game needs to pause until a client catches up (I know COD used to do this back in the day)
Yes that would be annoying, but at least it would fair.. and it may even force people to address their connectivity issues as they would experience it more often than not
Both players should be experiencing the same gameplay, giving people with terrible connections such a huge advantage should never be considered an acceptable solution
Unless something changes very soon then I'm done with this game for good.. it's just not worth my time playing through games when I'm at such a severe handicap

I am a different gamer in smooth fifa gameplay. I can take literally anyone to the end when gameplay is smooth. I am playing cod now and not bothered about fifa that much. Spending more time with the kids and wify is all that matters as nothing will change with this game unless they shut it down

Yeah knew it years ago mate, can almost guarantee the majority of top 100 players are playing on woeful unstable connections. I've been asking for connection restrictions in Fut Champions since Fifa 17, but like you said and they don't give a toss.

I say it all the time...
When R6 people were having connection problems, Ubisoft introduced some lag compensation to try balance connections... this resulted in a drastic disadvantage to people on better connections.
People complained said yo this is trash, Ubisoft realised this and removed it, then instead focused on fixing the netcode to improve it for all players, so that poor connection people wont suffer as much and good connection won't be punished.
They called that period "operation health"
Maybe FIFA needs a season called "injury rehab" where they work solely on net related stuff.

I can tell right now its not other people's connections, I get delay 99% of the time every match I play is 5 bars. Online friendlies is the best mode for gameplay atm.
Its overloaded servers or the routes that your internet takes to the servers even squad battles has a slight delay its all connected that's why I try squad battles before an online rivals match.
If anyone can find the server that fifa connects to when playing squad battles let me know.

If gameplay is smooth, same thing.

Because your internet probably sucked compared to most people so when they introduced the patch that slowed down other people with faster internet tadaa your lag disappeared.

It cant be that all my opponents have bad internet cause i played hundreds of games. I havent had a smooth game since early acces when it was great !
Idk what ea did but this year its a trainwreck and **** and they cant let it stay like this cause the masses are going to revolt and ultimately the game will die. Its already pretty dead imo.
People only play ut because of FOMO and not because its an enjoyable experience online. Its an absolute horrendous experience
