I'm in the same boat. Only need 4 more for Gold 3 too but can't be arsed playing skill spamming, drop backers every game. It's so tedious.
I have never failed to get G3 until this weekend. Its been awful. In the UK, UFO connection and yet so appalling and sluggish, especially so against any opponent based outside the UK. Embarrassing now for EA. I think it might have broken my addiction though. As I am not playing next week. I can't spend another weekend of this.
