Honestly i haven't tried any icons yet. But i managed to trade enough to afford Messi a couple weeks ago. He's absolutely amazing. Scores every game, pops up in every attack and rarely goes missing in a match. Although short his balance makes up for it so he always sticks on the ball.
Put him at CAM and he's the centre of every attack, his pace is enough for the meta this year but it's all about his passing which is pinpoint.

Plus the bonus is that he will hopefully continue to rise slowly up to Christmas, which in that case i'll sell and save up for his inevitable IF.
