Well, here are my 2 cents on input lag. Its been frustrating me for years now. Its shocking though how early we are experiencing the issue this year. EA will blame the issue on closed ports, teredo filter and of course your local internet provider. They will prove that by letting you do a connection protocol via UOTrace. There you will see how the ping is massively slowed down on its way to the EA servers. EA will advise you to contact your local network provider as they cant do anything about that.
EA has a point about checking your local settings. Deactivate filters, open up the ports, make sure you use a wired connection instead of WLAN. Those things will definitely improve your input lag issues.
However, thats not the whole story. I personally need to follow a certain routine to make Fifa even remotely playable online. First of all delete your FIFA profile. You get there from the main menu via "Settings > Profile". Delete everything in here. Dont worry, it wont affect FUT Club. Its just general settings like Player name indicator, net tension etc. which will be reset. Furthermore potentially corrupt files which cause input delay will be deleted too. A major nuisance about deleting your profile is that you will need to go through the intro sequence again when you start the game again.
Anyways, after deleting the profile, close the game entirely. That means going to your xbox home menu, select Fifa20, press the start button on your controller and select "quit". Next you want to go to "Settings > Disc & Blue-Ray > Blu-ray > Persistent storage > Clear persistent storage".
Now delete your temporary Xbox storage by switching your xbox off. Touch the Xbox power button for about 5 seconds till it switches off. Next remove the power cable from your xbox. Wait 30-60 seconds before plugging it back in and restarting your Xbox.
After restarting your Xbox go to "Settings > Network > Network Settings > Advanced settings > Alternate port selection": Try to select automatic at first. Make sure it now says Port 3074. If not, go back and select the port manually. Now start your Fifa again an check if your connection as improved.
I cant tell you if those steps make any sense. I have been following them for years now each time before I play Fifa and it feels like there is at least a slight improvement. Just now I came back from work to play a quick match. I was too lazy to go through the procedure explained above and the game was a total disaster which prompted me to post on here.
As I mentioned before, you definitely need to make sure to fix your local router settings. Playing games during rush hours in the evening also has a major effect on input delay. Nevertheless it is a joke that EA has been unable/unwilling to fix the issue for years. Its unacceptable to sell a game with a highly competitive online mode, which is so severely affected by input delay and ping issues. Its ridiculous to pass the blame on to the users internet provider and expect the user to apply certain in depth connection settings in order to properly enjoy the game. First an foremost they need to finally fix their servers.
The fact the deleting temporary files on your local device (as explained above) also improves the issue for some people and shows that something is badly wrong with the way EA programmed the game.
