4411 is great this year
I heard a lot of talk of the 442 flat and I tried it but was missing that central Cam play maker to dictate the game that I'm used to. I decided to try the 4411 and use Messi as a CF and it has been fantastic. Very well balanced on all areas and given you a lot of attacking options.
I've moved up from D4 to D2 since using this formation.

Agreed, playing it as a secondary tactic when the 4222 doesnt work, and its a good and fun to play formation at the same time. Drop back is definitely not necessary, and in my opinion having one cm on drop between defenders is a mistake.
I use balanced/balanced 4/4 5/5 myself and have 0 problems defending.

What tactics/instructions are you rolling with mate?
Tactics I'm playing drop back with 3 depth, 5 width.
Tried balanced but I was getting scored on a lot with through balls.
Attack Balanced on 5 width as well, 4 bars on players in box and 2 and 2 for corner/freeekicks.
Player instructions:
Fullbacks stay back.
CM dropbacks between defenders/cover center
CM stay back while attacking/ cover center
LW/RW: cut inside get in behind
CF: stay forward, get in behind
ST: Balanced

Yeah, I'm bouncing between the 442 and 4411 this year.... And occasionally the 41212 wide. It feels like I need to have and Lm and RM with full backs this year.
