Its because it gets routed through a third party and then servers instead of directly to the opposition...
Servers are ideal for games connecting 4 or more players together, but if its just 1v1 peer to peer reigns supreme, granted they implement safety measures to prevent the infamous lagg switch and DDoS - easily fixable by booting the player whos connection deteriorates first
