Over 2mil worth of upgrades - how did it change my WL results?
Last weekend I got Gold 3, then I spent all the coins I’d been saving and got lucky packing a big player. My upgrades were:
- Felipe Anderson to Neymar
- POTM Pukki to Mbappe
- Ndombelle to Fernandinho
- Tiereny to Marcelo
- Lindelof to Davinson Sanchez
- Aurier to Cancelo
- Kepa to Ederson
- 81 TOTW Abraham to 84 TOTW Abraham
The end result? Gold 3 this WL. Literally the same ranking before those upgrades. I know everyone is upgrading their teams, but I doubt many people upgraded their team as much as I did last week. Has anyone else experienced this?

I think you lot are putting too much emphasis on the players. In reality its all based on player skill, pretty much exclusively imo.
Think about the actual difference between lets say 80 rated pace or shooting versus 90. When translated into actual gameplay the difference is minimal.
Having good players just gives a placebo effect. It makes us think we should win more, in reality whats gunna have more of an effect...the extra 50 in game stats of an upgrade, or the actual buttons pressed by the user?

Whenever I tried upgrading my team it didnt really work and I ended up selling and going back to my old team. I hit t100 with it so it cant be that bad

Would it not help you weekend league players to go lose some points in rivals if you start on a good run to give you a lower skill rating, or is WL a separate entity?

I sold my team 2 weeks ago, i'm now sitting on 2 million in coins.
And running a cheap squad, that costed me 60k, and it even plays better than what I used to run.

The jump from the decent gold players to the high end ones isn't that big.
The only ones where the cards alone carry you to wins are the top end cards like vieira, gullit and the usual other suspects

It's really simple in FIFA
There's a few tiers of players people like to use
Cheap meta - Militao, Gomez, Inaki Williams, Ndombele, etc
Expensive and not meta - Modric,
Mid range meta ISH - Aubameyang, Griezman
Expensive and meta - R94, Gullit, Vieira,
Going from cheap meta to anything that isn't expensive and meta won't have a significant impact
Going from cheap meta to expensive and not meta is actually a downgrade
Going from cheap meta to expensive and meta is going to cost you 1mil+ per position
A 100k team is better than a lot of 500k teams
What you're best to do is, have a 100k ish team, all your cheap meta players, and invest in expensive meta attackers to carry you, more goals is invaluable, then just get superstar player after superstar player when you get enough coins for the next one

This week Went from approx 5 mil team sold up built approx 350k team guess what I finished exactly the same as last 2 weeks 14 wins 6 games remaining and people say it’s ptw
The game is a complete farce and everything is rigged other than pace stats on cards mean literally **** all

It’s just because of the matchmaking. So, if you buy a better team, you’ll probably win some matches you wouldn’t otherwise win. But as a consequence you’ll be matched against players who also have a similar win rate and unless your skill level has improved as well as your team you’ll most likely finish in exactly the same spot every week give or take 4 or 5 games.

One thing is that your probably not use to the new team, you time to adjust to your new players, they make different runs, have different shooting etc.
However, it will only get you 1-2 wins max than your skill level

I'm G3/G2 at best, have been for years and cannot progress regardless of team used.
Dont really care to be honest its just you kind of need to be involved in WL to keep up as you need the occasional rewards.

Whenever I upgrade my team significantly I get harder games for two reasons, I feel the game matches me with better players and also the way the gameplay is this year it takes a while to get used to exactly how to use each player. Often enough its trial and error to find the right players, the amount of tax I've lost this year from trying players is defo close to 1mil.

Lol you are probably right. I created a very cheap team to use for the Mbabu requirements, with red Werner at the top by far my best player and I didn't lose a game on rivals against some very competent opponents. Surprised me and it drove my opponents nuts how a player like Zakaria (rated 77 I believe) could just overpower 600k midfielders.

Got lucky and packed Red Mbappe in Gold 1 rewards 1.5 weeks ago. Built a new team around him with the same base I used for the team to reach Gold 1 in the first place. Can now barely reach Gold 2 even though Mbappe is amazing...
I’m sitting on 1.1 Mil coins atm, saving up for Messi. As soon as I have him, I’ll prob barely reach Gold 3 😂

I can say this will happen if your using same style of play and mabye not used to the team .
I had some players I've got and my results went worse even though they was better players .
I did however using my cheap team on 17 and 18 get similar results like gold 1 and Elite but defo easier with high tier .
As if pace was only factor i could win just with silver players like older fifas .
Star players imo are the key as when I had my team last year with full 90pace and 90 stats I got much more wins than my cheap team .
Like the style of a player can make a huge impact to your team and I had Butra last year and 1st week noticed he made shots look easy compared to a Mertens .
But work rates and tactics play 50% this year as abuse for now hopefully is gone.
It's not as good for me as 17 with tactics and runs but defo notice a change with high attacking and aggression in runs .

I’m not expecting to jump from G3 to elite or anything. The fact that the main way to success is skill is a good thing. Just a little surprised that I got the exact same rank. I was hoping to finally start breaking G2 again or something after all of those upgrades.

yeah tbh for me it doesnt matter that much either. As long as youre playing with "decent" players like allan telles eder militao etc there is for me not much more room to improve playerwise. Get the same results in WL with guedes nif ben yedder and gelson martins as i get with neymar red ben yedder ousmane dembele and baby cruyff. Thats why i sold up last week to trade so i can just buy the players i like to play with

The skill points matter. They effect what rank you'll reach.
I'm a gold 2 player. Sometimes hit gold 1. Went 20 and 9 a few weeks ago and then back to 17/11. I'm currently on 10/4 (old buddy, destroy. Kill all hippies) this weekend so far.
So have you noticed how you can sometimes get on a good early run which makes it look like you can reach a rank or maybe 2 higher ?
I've been in positions in previous fifas where I could go 18/4 and is still end up with 25/26 wins. Most I've ever had was 27 with a ligue 1 tots team.
When in a good weekend league position I'll have games that I'm dominating, creating chances but my players can't hit a barn door. This is because of how I create my chances. I'm not a skiller. I use a few but I don't spam them or combo them. Ball roll, drag back, step over turn and heel to heel. That's my repertoire. But if I want to git gud and reach higher ranks then I have to improve my game. That's by incorporating skill moves into chance creation or leading up to the shot.
It improves shot power/accuracy. That's part of the fifa/fut magic.
Also the rock, paper, scissors effect of tactics. These effect how your player perform also.
People blame scripting and other words for it but it's really a poorly implemented tactics engine. Or more to the point not full explained by EA.
If they told us how tactics can effect team/player performance and what skill points mean in FUT/WL. It would stop alot of the conspiracy.
That's not excusing atrocious referees, player selection that makes it impossible to defend at times. Terrible defensive meta. Etc
